The formula, and what it is really telling you
Needed = (Goal − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight, where Weight is the final's share of the course.
The useful part is not the number itself but whether the number is reachable. Anything above 100 means the goal is already out of reach, and it is far better to learn that a fortnight before the exam than afterwards.
A worked example
You are sitting on 82%, you want an A (90%), and the final is worth 30% of the course.
Needed = (90 − 82 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 108.7%. Unless there is extra credit, that A is gone.
So ask the more useful question instead — what holds a B (80%)? (80 − 82 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 75.3%. That is a completely different exam to prepare for, and a completely different fortnight.
Common mistakes
- Entering the final's weight as its point value instead of its percentage of the course.
- Using your current exam average rather than your current overall course grade — they are rarely the same.
- Ignoring a syllabus rule that requires a minimum exam score to pass regardless of the overall total.
Questions people ask
What if the answer is above 100%?
The target is unreachable through the final alone. Ask about extra credit, check for a dropped-lowest-score policy, and reset to a realiztic goal.
What if it comes out negative?
You have already secured the grade — even a zero on the final leaves you above the target. Verify there is no minimum-exam-score rule before relaxing.
Does this work for a cumulative final worth more than the coursework?
Yes. The weight can be anything up to 100%; the arithmetic is unchanged.
