About the PNG to JPG tool
Convert PNG images to JPG to slash file size for the web, email, and forms that only accept JPEG. Transparent areas are filled with the background color you choose.

When this is the right conversion — and when it is not
PNG is lossless, so it is large. For a photograph that is pure waste: JPG will be a fraction of the size with no visible difference.
For screenshots, logos, diagrams and anything with sharp text or flat color, PNG is genuinely the better format and converting to JPG will make the file bigger and blurrier at the edges.
What the numbers look like
We measured both cases on 1600×900 images.
Photographic content: PNG 219 KB, JPG quality 90 72 KB. JPG wins decisively.
Flat graphic with solid shapes: PNG 8 KB, JPG quality 90 23 KB. PNG is nearly three times smaller — the opposite result.
So the honest rule is not 'JPG is smaller'. It is 'JPG is smaller for photographs'.
Common mistakes
- Converting screenshots or diagrams to JPG, which produces visible fuzz around text.
- Forgetting that transparency will be flattened onto a solid background.
- Converting a PNG master file and deleting the original. Keep the lossless copy.

What happens to transparent areas?
They are filled with the background color you choose — white by default, since JPG cannot store transparency.
Which quality setting should I use?
85–90 for photographs you want to look good, 70–80 when file size matters more.
Is the conversion reversible?
No. Converting the JPG back to PNG produces a large file containing the JPG's compression artefacts.
