Flip is not the same as rotate
Flipping mirrors the image across an axis, producing a reflection. Rotating turns it around a point. A flipped photograph of text reads backwards; a rotated one does not.
Horizontal flip is the common one — it corrects selfies, which most phone cameras mirror by default, and it lets you match the direction a subject faces in a layout.
Where it matters most
Selfie cameras show you a mirrored preview because that is how you see yourself in a mirror. Some phones save the mirrored version and some save the true one, which is why your own face can look subtly wrong in a saved selfie.
A horizontal flip fixes it — but check any text in the frame, because a flip reverses lettering on clothing and signs.
Common mistakes
- Flipping a photo that contains text or a logo, which then reads backwards.
- Flipping images intended for print without checking that any layout direction still works.
