About the Halloween Candy Calculator
Every year the same two mistakes happen: you run out at 7:40pm and turn the porch light off early, or you buy four bags too many and spend November eating them. The math is simple — the hard part is guessing how many children will actually knock. This calculator does the arithmetic transparently so you can adjust the guess and watch the answer change.
It multiplies your expected trick-or-treaters by the pieces you plan to hand each one, adds a buffer of your choosing, then rounds up to whole bags — because you can't buy part of a bag. Add a price per bag and it'll also estimate what you'll spend and what each trick-or-treater costs you. Everything updates live as you type and runs entirely in your browser.

How to use it
- Enter how many trick-or-treaters you expect. If you've never counted, a quiet street is usually 20–50 and a busy, well-lit one can be 150–300.
- Set how many pieces each child gets — two or three is standard in most US neighborhoods.
- Enter the pieces per bag, printed on the packaging (typically 90–150 for a large variety bag).
- Choose a buffer. 15% covers the late rush; pick 50% if this is your first year at the address.
- Optionally add a price per bag to see the estimated cost.
Tips
- Not sure how many kids to expect? Ask a neighbor who's lived there longer — it's by far the most accurate source you'll find.
- Count doorbells, not children. Groups arrive together, so the totals climb faster than you'd think between 6pm and 8pm.
- Buy candy you don't personally love. The most reliable way to still have some left at 8pm.
- Two smaller bowls beat one big one. Refilling from a hidden reserve stops an early visitor taking a handful.
