What inversion actually does

Each color channel is replaced by 255 minus its value. Black becomes white, red becomes cyan, and mid-gray stays almost unchanged.

The practical uses are film-negative scanning, checking a design's contrast, preparing dark-mode assets, and spotting detail hidden in very dark or very bright regions.

A note on scanned negatives

Inverting a color negative gets you most of the way there but leaves a strong orange cast, because film negatives carry an orange base layer. You will usually need to correct the white balance afterwards with the Saturation or Brightness tools.

Black-and-white negatives invert cleanly with no correction needed.

Practical uses beyond the novelty

Inversion is genuinely useful for checking a design. Flip a layout to its negative and problems with contrast become obvious — areas that looked distinct in color often collapse into the same tone when inverted, which usually means they were relying on hue rather than brightness to separate them. That matters for accessibility, since color-blind users experience something similar.

It is also the fastest way to read detail in very dark regions of a photograph. Shadow detail that is invisible as near-black becomes near-white and easy to inspect once inverted, which is why the technique is common in forensic and astronomical image review.

And for scanned documents, inverting a photograph taken of a whiteboard or a dark-mode screenshot produces a light-background version that prints without consuming an entire ink cartridge.

Is inversion reversible?
Yes, mathematically — inverting twice returns the original. On a JPG you will lose a little quality each save.

Does it work on transparent PNGs?
The color channels invert; the alpha channel is untouched, so transparent stays transparent.

Why does my negative look orange?
Color film has an orange base mask. Invert first, then correct the white balance.
