About the Pumpkin Carving Idea Generator
A pumpkin is one evening and one chance — so it helps to know what you're carving before the top comes off. This generator suggests two designs at a time, matched to how confident you are with a knife and the look you're after, and each one comes with the tools you'll need, an honest time estimate, numbered instructions and a safety note written for that specific design.
The 32 designs cover more than knife work. There are painted and no-carve options for small children, drilled-dot patterns, push-pin techniques, cookie-cutter punching, and skin-shaving relief carving where you scrape rather than cut through, which is what produces that soft internal glow. Everything runs in your browser from a hand-written set of ideas.

How to use it
- Pick your skill level: beginner, easy, medium or advanced.
- Choose a style — scary, funny, cute, classic, witch, ghost, monster, cat, skull or family-friendly.
- Press Generate carving ideas for two designs.
- Use Print to take the instructions to the kitchen table, or Copy to send them to whoever is helping.
Tips
- Cut the lid at an angle, not straight down. A slanted edge stops the lid dropping into the pumpkin once the flesh dries and shrinks.
- Scrape the carving wall down to about 2.5 cm (1 inch). Thinner walls are far easier to cut and let much more light through.
- Carve from the center outwards. Removing the middle pieces first keeps the pumpkin structurally strong while you work on the edges.
- Use a battery tealight rather than a candle — no scorching, no fire risk, and the pumpkin lasts noticeably longer.
- Carving late? A finished pumpkin softens in about five to ten days, so check the Halloween countdown before you start.

Choose "Beginner" and "Family-friendly". Those designs use painting, stickers, push pins and cookie cutters rather than blades, so a child can do most of the work safely.
Usually five to ten days, and less in warm or humid weather. Carve close to Halloween, keep it out of direct sun, and a battery light rather than a flame will slow the drying.
