Instagram sizes that matter
Getting the dimensions right prevents the platform cropping your image in a way you did not intend.
Current dimensions
- Square post: 1080 × 1080 (1:1)
- Portrait post: 1080 × 1350 (4:5) — the tallest allowed in feed
- Landscape post: 1080 × 566 (1.91:1)
- Stories and Reels: 1080 × 1920 (9:16)
- Profile picture: 320 × 320, displayed as a circle
What to watch for
Portrait 4:5 occupies the most vertical space in the feed, which is why it consistently outperforms square and landscape on a phone screen.
For Stories, keep important content away from the top and bottom 250 pixels — that space is covered by the interface.
Common mistakes
- Uploading an image whose aspect ratio does not match, and letting the platform crop it for you.
- Placing important content near the edges, where cropping varies between devices.
- Uploading below the recommended pixel size, which looks soft on high-density screens.
