Rounded corners are a modern interface convention — cards, avatars, thumbnails and app icons all use them. Applied to a photograph they make it read as a UI element rather than a standalone image.
The output must be a PNG. Rounding creates transparent corners, and JPG cannot store transparency, so a JPG export fills them with a solid color and the effect disappears against any colored background.
Getting the radius right
The radius should scale with the image, not sit at a fixed value. A 16 px radius that looks right on a 300 px thumbnail is barely visible on a 1600 px hero image. As a starting point, use roughly 2–4% of the shorter side: about 8–12 px on a 300 px thumbnail, 32–64 px on a 1600 px image.
There is one radius to avoid: exactly half the shorter side turns a square into a circle and a rectangle into a lozenge. That is fine if it is what you intended and jarring if it is not, so check the preview rather than trusting the number.
Finally, remember that many platforms round corners themselves. Uploading an already-rounded image to a service that applies its own rounding produces a visible double curve with a sliver of background trapped between the two — a small detail that makes an otherwise professional asset look amateur.
