Tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?
Etiquette guides in the US generally say pre-tax is correct. In practice most people tip on the total because it is the number printed largest on the receipt.
On a $68.40 bill with 8% tax the difference between the two conventions is well under a dollar — worth knowing, not worth an argument.
A worked example
Bill of $68.40, split four ways:
- 18% tip: $12.31 tip, $80.71 total, $20.18 each
- 20% tip: $13.68 tip, $82.08 total, $20.52 each
Thirty-four cents a head separates 18% from 20%. Useful perspective when a table spends five minutes debating it.
Common mistakes
