PNG compresses differently from JPG

PNG is lossless, so it cannot simply discard detail the way JPG does. Size reductions come from optimizing how pixels are stored and, optionally, from reducing the number of colors.

That means the savings depend heavily on content. Flat graphics with few colors shrink enormously; photographs saved as PNG barely shrink at all — those should be JPG or WebP instead.

What the numbers look like

Our measurement makes the point. A flat graphic of solid shapes at 1600×900 was 8 KB as an optimized PNG. The same dimensions carrying photographic content came to 219 KB.

Twenty-seven times the size, same format, same pixel count. If your PNG is enormous, the usual reason is that it contains a photograph.

Common mistakes

  • Using PNG for photographs. Convert to JPG or WebP instead and the file will collapse.
  • Reducing to 256 colors on an image with gradients, which produces visible banding.
  • Expecting PNG optimization to match JPG's savings. It is a different mechanism with different limits.

Questions people ask

Will my PNG lose quality?
Not with lossless optimization. Color reduction is lossy and can cause banding, so preview before saving.

Why is my PNG so large?
Almost always because it holds photographic content. PNG is designed for flat color and sharp edges.

Should I switch to WebP?
For the web, usually yes. Lossless WebP was 34% smaller than PNG in our test with no pixel changed.
