Dimensions first, quality second

The single most useful fact about image compression: halving an image's width quarters its file size, because you have removed three-quarters of the pixels.

Dragging the quality slider down is the tool most people reach for first, and it is the one that visibly damages the picture. Resize first, then compress — in that order the same target size looks dramatically better.

What the numbers look like

We tested what it actually takes to land under 100 KB with a real photograph. Resizing to about 1600 × 840 pixels and encoding at quality 35 hit the target while keeping the image clearly legible.

Reaching the same size by quality alone, at full dimensions, produced a visibly blocky result. Same file size, very different picture.

Common mistakes

  • Uploading a 12-megapixel phone photo unchanged and expecting the quality slider to rescue it.
  • Aiming for exactly the limit. Target 5–10% under it, since some systems measure slightly differently.
  • Confusing KB with KiB. Some forms mean 1,000 bytes and some mean 1,024 — another reason to leave headroom.

Will the photo still be recognizable?
Yes, for a normal photograph. Fine text in a scanned document suffers most, so crop tightly rather than shrinking further.

What if there is also a minimum dimension?
Then quality is your only remaining lever. Crop closely to the subject first — less content in the frame compresses smaller at the same dimensions.
