About the GIF to JPG tool

Extract the first frame of any GIF as a flat JPG — handy for thumbnails, previews, and posts where animation isn't supported.

Frame extraction and encoding both happen in the browser. The GIF is never uploaded anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Add your GIF.
  2. Choose which frame to keep if it is animated.
  3. Download the JPG.

Two limits worth knowing before you convert

GIF is limited to 256 colors. Converting to JPG will not add colors back — the banding you can see in a GIF gradient is already baked in.

GIF supports animation and simple transparency; JPG supports neither. An animated GIF becomes a single still frame, and transparent areas are filled with a solid color.

What the numbers look like

Where JPG genuinely wins is photographic content that was saved as GIF by mistake — a common problem with older screenshots and downloads. There, JPG is both smaller and free of the 256-color banding limit for future edits.

Where it loses is flat graphics and logos, for which PNG is the better target: lossless, sharper edges, and real transparency.

Common mistakes

  • Converting an animated GIF and expecting the animation to survive.
  • Choosing JPG for a logo or icon, where PNG keeps the edges clean and the background transparent.
  • Expecting the conversion to fix color banding. The lost colors cannot be recovered.

Questions people ask

What happens to the animation?
Only the frame you select is kept. JPG has no animation support at all.

Should I use PNG instead?
For anything with flat color, sharp edges or transparency, yes.

Will the image look better as a JPG?
No. It cannot exceed the quality of the GIF it came from.
