Dimensions first, quality second

The single most useful fact about image compression: halving an image's width quarters its file size, because you have removed three-quarters of the pixels.

Dragging the quality slider down is the tool most people reach for first, and it is the one that visibly damages the picture. Resize first, then compress — in that order the same target size looks dramatically better.

What the numbers look like

Measured on a real photograph at quality 80, changing only the width:

  • 2400 px wide → 302 KB
  • 1600 px → 183 KB
  • 1200 px → 136 KB
  • 800 px → 71 KB
  • 400 px → 24 KB

Halving the width from 1600 to 800 cut the file to 39% of its size. No quality slider was touched.

Common mistakes

  • Reducing quality to 30 while leaving the image 4000 pixels wide.
  • Shrinking below the dimensions the destination actually requires.
  • Running the same image through compression repeatedly instead of starting from the original each time.

Questions people ask

Does resizing lose quality?
It removes pixels, so enlarging afterwards will look soft. At the size you actually display it, the difference is usually invisible.

What width should I use?
1200–1600 px covers most web use. 800 px is plenty for an email attachment.

Is there a size limit?
